Myrtle Beach Bike Week 2009 Will Go Down

Has Myrtle Beach Cancelled Bike Week? Short answer is no, read on.
There is news floating around that Myrtle Beach has cancelled 2009 Bike Week. While I am not involved in the organization of the event nor the local government, I can give my take:
- Fact: Black Bike Week is officially known as “Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest”. Atlantic Beach is a seperate municipality located north of the City of Myrtle Beach. Therefore the City of Myrtle Beach CANNOT “Cancel” bike week, as their mayor would have you believe.
The City of Myrtle Beach has never wanted the bikers to come to their town. This much has been true. They just always lacked the legal or practical authority (being that the event has NEVER BEEN HOSTED by the bity) to do so. Further more, the event has always been a get together for all the bikers and visitors, and most of us has attended for years without actually attending any “official” events.
So how does one “cancel” an event that is not centrally organized or held? Is there really a city in this great union that a lawful citizen can’t go with his/her motorcycle? I didn’t think so.
And what would happen to the holiday revenue for all the local businesses if only half of the bikers show up to the area because of the mayor’s misguided attempt? The city will still be swimming with motorcycles while the other vacationers will be surprised to find the bikes there. They would probably feel cheated by the mayor too because the rallies had been supposedly canceled.
I wouldn’t say I am surprised by this at all. They try and try every year to discourage bikers to come to the area. I guess when all the threats fails, they resort to out right lying. Lie about cancelling an event that has no association with them, let alone authority.
I call for every law abiding citizen of this country who has been going to the beach for years to continue to go to the beach, on MemorialDay. We can enjoy the beach and our vacations while providing a presence that we can’t be oppressed and discriminated against. If all the unsuspecting tourists who believed in their lies went home unhappy because the Mayor of Myrtle Beach can’t cancel an event that they don’t host, then maybe they will choose other beaches to vacation to in the future. Maybe the misguided attempt to discriminate against us would turn into lost revenues for the months and years to come. Maybe then they will realize that there is no place in this century, in this nation for that kind of thought and behavior.
2009 Dates: May 21-25
Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bike Fest – or as many of us know – we vacation with our bikes at the beach on memorial day weekend
P.S. – I don’t feel that the city has the legal right to pass an ordinance restricting manditory safety gear for licensed motorcycle drivers. That right seems to me belongs to the state of South Carolina. I could be wrong as I am not from SC but someone ought to challenge that, and any provisions of the new rules in court.
But if you read all the info released by the City of Myrtle Beach, you will get the following:
- You can still come and ride bikes in Myrtle Beach during Memorial day weekend
- You can still park your trailer on hotel property (or any private property that allows you to)
- There will be no event-related vending or event in the city of Myrtle Beach (but the event is in Atlantic Beach)
So what have they cancelled? What have they changed for us. NOTHING! Just obey the laws as you should, and they can’t do anything. If they pick onDay.
